Common questions and tips from our work with South Haven customers.
- Can a hole in drywall be patched?
- Most holes can. Small nail holes and dents just need filler and sanding. Larger holes usually get cut back to a clean square, backed or fitted with a new piece of drywall, then taped, mudded and sanded smooth. Very large or water-damaged sections may need full panels replaced. Call to describe the damage for a quote.
- Should I fix a leak before drywall repair?
- Yes. If the damage came from water, the source needs to be found and fixed first, or the new drywall will soak through again. Wet drywall can also hide mold behind the surface. Once the leak is stopped and the area has dried, the damaged section can be cut out and replaced.
Tip
Plan for paint after the patch
A drywall patch is not finished until it is primed and painted. Fresh joint compound absorbs paint differently than the rest of the wall, so skipping primer can leave a dull spot. If you have leftover paint from the room, keep it handy, since matching an existing color is easier with the original can.
